My great grand father Robert Stephenson McKay, was a stone-mason, who settled in Pleasant township, a native of Scotland; born in Aberdeenshire October 31, 1813. His young days were spent around his native town of Fraserburgh. In 1836 he immigrated to England, where he married Miss Emma Hursh, who was born in Manchester, England, in 1825.
In 1848 they immigrated to America, and located in Springfield, Ohio, where they remained until 1853, when they moved to Knox county, Ohio, and located in Jefferson township. There they lived until 1859, when he purchased and moved on the property Pleasant township, near Mt. Vernon, Ohio. They had four children: William W, Erich, Anna, and Clara. He was engaged in the building of the Cleveland, Columbus & Mt Vernon railroad, doing all the masonry along the road from Millersburgh, Holmes County, to Bang’s Station, Knox County, Ohio.
