Students at Farr High School have been invited to contribute towards the future direction of the Strathnaver Museum through a recently established Strathnaver Museum Youth Group. Fiona Mackenzie from the Museum has been meeting regularly with pupils to find out more about what the Museum can offer to them in terms of opportunities to take part in activities, skills development and work experience. The Museum isn’t just about curation and research but can offer students a range of opportunities from marketing and PR, event planning, IT skills and much more. Since September 2015 the young people have taken part in a range of activities from researching historical sites in their area to learning how to upload data into a back office system for the Mobile Heritage App for Caithness and Sutherland called Venture North. The students have also begun to plan an exciting digital exhibition for the Museum’s 40th anniversary next year. The film they create will be launched at the Festival of Museums on 14th May and will be shown in the Museum throughout 2016. As well as this students are able to count the time they spend as part of the project towards the Saltire Award scheme which rewards young people for their volunteering activities.
