Siegfried H.W. Schierstedt-Mackay

I was born on April 21, 1946 in Hanover, Germany.

My mother, a pediatric nurse, was unmarried and 20 years old at the time. The Second World War had just ended and the English/Scots were stationed in Hanover as an occupying force. In 1945, my mother met and fell in love with the Scotsman John MacKay. Shortly after my birth, my father was suddenly transferred and my mother was alone with me. A few years later, when my mother had no contact with my father, she married my stepfather.

Many years later, when I had just turned 18, my mother told me about my Scottish father. After my medical studies, when I opened my own practice in Münster, I tried to track down my father. Despite all my efforts, I was unfortunately unsuccessful. In 1981, I went on holiday to Scotland for the first time to get to know my father’s country. I cannot describe the feeling I had when I arrived in Scotland. It was incredible. I had the feeling I was coming home. Since then, I have regularly spent my holidays in Scotland four times a year, in all seasons. Later, I and my wife bought a static caravan for over six years at the campsite on Loch Eil in Corpach.

In 1985, I founded the Clan Mackay Society Germany, see our clan website: , and contacted the then President of the Clan Mackay Society, Lady Elizabeth Fairbairn. In 2009, we, the Clan Mackay Society Germany, took part in the “Homecoming” of Clans Worldwide. At the beginning of 2023, I received an invitation to the inauguration of Lord Reay, our Chief of Clan Mackay Scotland. At this celebration, I was given the great honor of being his official Commissioner for Germany. This sealed certificate now hangs in my clan room at home.

I am proud to have a Scottish father. My heart will always beat for Scotland.
