Museum Refurbishment Strathnaver Museum is now entering Stage II of its exciting refurbishment project.  A copy of the plans can be seen in the Naver Teleservice Centre, Bettyhill.

Museum open for new season on Monday, 31 March 2008.

Bumblebee Project:  Come and spot all the different species of bees this summer at the new Bumblebee Site behind the Museum.  Pick up a leaflet at the museum.

Museum Refurbishment  Our plans for refurbishment will make the Museum a more accessible and exciting centre for  everyone.  We have a growing programme of events and activities involving the local community, local schoolchildren as well as visitors to the area and we always welcome your comments.

Our plans include:

● New display areas with changing exhibitions from the Museum collection

● A new library/research room

● A new shop area for books and museum souvenirs

Bettyhill Gala 2006:  The staff of the museum turned out in mass in yellow and black hoops for the float for the Gala, using the Bumblebee theme - Bee Keeper - Old Bee - Bar Bee - Drone - Wood Bee - Busy Bee and a hilarious Queen Bee. They came second in the Float Competition.

Bumblebee Project:  A small site at Farr Glebe, behind the Museum has been especially preserved for for local bumblebees.  This is because there is an abundance of flowering plants, including clovers, vetches, scabious and knapweeds, from May to September.  The local Ranger Paul Castle with backing and funding from SNH has erected a plinth and produced leaflets to mark the opening of this unique project

Highland Archaeology Fortnight 2007  The Museum coordinated a school/archaeology events - North Coast Primary School youngsters in Strathnaver on 4 October 2007.  These activity days are being run jointly with North Highland Forest Trust, North Sutherland Countryside Ranger, Tongue School, Farr School and Durness School.  For further information about Highland archaeology events contact: www.highland.gov.uk/yourenvironment/conservation/archaeology

Their Past Your Future  As part of the oral history research undertaken through the Mackay Country project, the Museum coordinated workshops, interviews and storytelling sessions to create a unique CD for posterity.  The CD and a booklet are available to purchase from the Museum - contact 01641 521418 or strathnavermus@ukonline.co.uk for further details.  The project was coordinated by Rachel Skene and the quilt shown below was created from local memorabilia and designed by Lindsay Skene.

'Coast' walk for the BBC series  Farr High School and Strathnaver Museum coordinated a Strathnaver Clearances walk from the Achanlochy village site to the sea at Bettyhill. 300 people turned out for the event and  77 year-old Alick John Mackay from Swordly related the story of his ancestors who were among the first to be cleared from Truderscaig to Grummore in 1807 to make way for the 'Great Sheep Tenement'.  www.bbc.co.uk/coast

Province of Strathnaver Excavation at Klibreck  An excavation of the old township at Klibreck was undertaken in June 2006 by a team from the Glasgow University Archaeology Research Division.  The project was directed jointly by Dr Olivia Lelong (GUARD) and Dr Amy Gazin-Shwartz (Assumption College, Massachusetts).
